European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
